Year Three
WHAT’S IT LIKE IN YEAR THREE?
Year 3 is your child’s first year in Key Stage 2 and this is where children are encouraged to take more ownership of their learning and become increasingly independent. Children will build upon the solid foundations taught in Key Stage 1 and will refine and apply the skills they have acquired to become fluent readers, recognise a wide range of sight vocabulary and practise a range of strategies to decode new words. Although the Multiplication Tables Check is not until Year 4, we begin to include weekly practice of times tables in Year 3 so that the children have plenty of time to prepare and become fluent. Year 3 is packed full of exciting topics ranging from learning all about the Stone Age in History to studying William Morris in Art. We aim to bring the curriculum to life as much as possible for our children by holding Experience Days and inviting visitors into school to link with our topics – we know this is a highlight for many of our children! In Year 3, children will also take part in an African drumming workshop with a music specialist where they will learn about the origin of the drums and will learn how to play them. Throughout their time in Year 3, children will also participate in weekly swimming lessons where they can either learn to swim or further develop their skills in this area of the curriculum.
